Pocket Square 'Self-Portrait' Vincent van Gogh
Artwork: 'Self-Portrait’
Author: Vincent van Gogh
This year we’re celebrating our 15th anniversary! To mark the occasion, we’ve prepared a limited series of pocket squares—bestsellers from previous years. We have printed this semi-abstract design on pure silk from the Como region of Italy. As with all our pocket squares, the edges are hand-rolled by our skilled craftswomen here in Katowice.
The 'Self-Portrait’ pocket square first debuted in our collection in 2021.
During his lifetime, Vincent van Gogh created 38 self-portraits (34 paintings and 4 drawings). This collection places him among the most prolific self-portraitists of all time. For van Gogh, painting portraits was a form of introspection, a way to earn money, and an opportunity to develop his artistic skills.
When he began painting his first portraits, his models were peasants. Later, he shifted to landscapes and flowers—mainly because he couldn’t afford to pay models. He explained this in a letter to his sister in 1887. That’s why he started painting himself. His constant lack of money was also the reason he continued making self-portraits in the years that followed.
